Word Problems on Time and Distance

How to Calculate Time and Distance :

Solved Problems :

1. A man walks14.4km in 4 hours.Calculate the speed of the man in km/hr as wel as m/sec . Also find how much distance will be covered by him in 6 hours.

Solution :

Distance covered = 14.4 km,

Time taken = 4 hours

Which is = 14.4km/4hr = 3.6km/hr

Distance covered = 3.6 * (5/18)m/sec = 1 m/sec

2. Find the time taken by a train 180m long running at 72 km/hr in crossing an eletric pole.

Solution:

Speed of the train = 72km/hr = [72* 5/18]m/sec = 20m/sec.

Distance covered in crossing a pole = length of the train = 180m

Time taken to cross the eletric pole = Distance/ Speed = 180m/20m/sec = 9 sec.

3. A 175m long train crosses a 185m long tunnel in 45 sec. Find speed of the train in km/hr.

Solution:

Length of the train = 175m

Length of the tunnel = 185m

so distance covered by train in crossing the tunnel = 175m + 185m = 360m

Taken time = 45 sec.

Speed of the train = Distance covered/ Time taken = 360m/45 sec = 8 m/sec

          = [8 * 18/5]km/hr = [144/5]km/hr = 28.8 km/hr.

Hence, speed of the train in km/hr = 28.8km/hr.
